King Lear. From the start of this I knew I wanted something dark and menacing. Every detail from the set to the sewing of the costumes needs to paint a portrait of betrayal and a darker purpose. Lighting should be designed in such a way that the faces of the actors are hollow and seem sunken in. Using lighting placed steeply overhead should help create this effect. Makeup will also play a large part in establishing a look for all the actors that makes them look continuously tired and almost not quite human. It is important for the show that nothing looks ordinary or simple. The set should be dark and uneven with perhaps long flowing torn drapes hanging in the back. This doubled with correct lighting could make for a nice impending doom feeling for the audience to pick up on. The setting and location should be centered around medieval times. A court yard or court room with worn stone would make for a darker setting. The tone of the entire show needs to be set by every tool of theatre that can be used. Communication between departments is very important. Each photo included should give an example of what is being sought after for this show. For the casting of each character it is important that each actor is be recognized for what type of person they are immediately. This show will be stylized in a sense until honest moments that are needed can surprise the audience. Costumes should be centered around dark copper tones that set a feeling of structured court life. The style of the costumes should contrast with this feeling by being unkept and not taken care of. This with the set and lighting should all compliment one another to create that unnatural feeling that the show needs to reach.
